What’s your business all about?
BeerBods is the UK’s leading online beer club and subscription service. Our subscribers get one beer and the story behind it delivered to them at home for £3 a week and then go online to chat about it.
What was the inspiration behind your business idea?
I was holding beer tastings in a shed and thought “what if I did this on the internet instead?”
In summer 2012, I put up a one-page website explaining the idea for an online beer club and subscription service, agreeing that if 20 people signed up in the first week I would turn it into a business.
Over 250 people signed up in the first 24 hours!
What would be your top tip to anyone thinking of starting their own business?
Do what you love. That’s the only way to get other people to love it too.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve overcome?
Crossing the start line. Giving up a good, well-paid, secure job to launch a start-up is scary stuff.
What’s your proudest business moment?
Last year we decided to get some investment and ended up raising £150,000 from 101 investors (all existing customers) using crowdfunding, in less than 36 hours. At the time this was a crowd-funding record. That showed people really believed in what we are doing.
By the end of 2014, BeerBods had grown their subscription base and successfully set a crowd-funding record which allowed them to grow the business further. The customers who made BeerBods what it is now were able to own a part of the business through the crowd-funding, and they took on more staff and even started brewing their own beer.
BeerBods is now 4 people, 2 dogs and 3000 subscribers! They have their own YouTube channel, BeerBods TV, run BeerBods Live events to bring their community of beer lovers together and are successfully spreading the word encouraging people to drink better beer.
